Report: New Apple TV set to be announced in September

Apple will announce a new version of its Apple TV streaming box this September, during the same event it typically announces new iPhones, according to a Buzzfeed report that cited an anonymous source close to the company.

In classic Apple fashion, the device is expected to be slimmer and faster, packing an A8 chip, a powerful processor currently used in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. The new Apple TV will support Siri for voice commands and pack a new remote with a built-in touchpad.

The device might also include a new app store and software development kit to enable creation of those apps. An app store could have enormous implications for the way people use the device. It could turn the Apple TV into a central hub to control internet-connected appliances, and not just be a way to watch television.

Rumors had been circulating that the company would announce the new streaming box at its Worldwide Developer Conference, but Apple abandoned those plans to focus the event on Apple Music, its new music streaming service, according to the report.

Apple's long-rumored television subscription service will likely not be addressed at the September event. While the report says such a service is coming, it will not be announced until later in the year or year after.

Apple cut the price of the current, third-generation Apple TV down to $79 from $99 in March. But that machine is aging, having debuted in 2012.
